The Tower-Soudan Historical Society extends a warm invitation to all history enthusiasts to join us for our Annual Membership Dinner Meeting. Here’s what you can expect from this event:

Location: Herbert R. Lamppa Civic Center, Tower
Event Highlights:
- History Happy Half Hour: Kick off the evening with a History Happy Half Hour at 5:00 PM, where you can mingle with fellow history lovers and enjoy refreshments.
- Guest Speaker Presentation: Immerse yourself in a captivating presentation by our featured guest speaker on the history of Indian education in the United States and the children’s boarding school experience with a focus on the Vermilion Lake Indian School on Lake Vermilion where her grandparents met. The History Talk presentation begins at 5:30 PM.
- Linda LeGarde Grover is a member of the Bois Forte of Ojibwe and professor emeritus of American Indian studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Her most recent publications are the novel A Song Over Miskwaa Rapids; a mixed-genre memoir Gichigami Hearts: Stories and Histories from Misaabekong (University of Minnesota Press October 2021) and a revised re-issue of her research paper “From Assimilation to Termination: The Vermilion Lake Indian School” (Minnesota History Fall 2021).
- Grover’s extensive research on American Indian boarding schools is extended family tribal community focused and centers upon the schools that her family members attended. Her award-winning works, all of which are threaded with the boarding school experiences, include the novel The Road Back to Sweetgrass (Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers Fiction Award; Native Writers Circle of the Americas First Book Award), The Dance Boots (Flannery O’Connor Award; Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize); The Sky Watched: Poems of Ojibwe Lives (Red Mountain Press Editor’s Award; 2017 Northeastern Minnesota Book Award for Poetry) and Onigamiising: Seasons of an Ojibwe Year (2018 Minnesota Book Award for Memoir and Creative Nonfiction; Northeastern Minnesota Book Award).

- $5.00 cost to attend the guest speaker History Talk presentation.
- However, if registered for the Annual Membership Dinner Meeting, it is included in the $25.00 reservation.

- Brief Membership Meeting: Join us for a brief meeting of the membership, where we recognize volunteers and board members for their invaluable contributions. The president will provide a summary of the Tower-Soudan Historical Society’s achievements from the past year and outline plans for the coming year. The annual election of board members is held during the brief 15-minute business meeting.
- Fun Fundraising Traditions: Experience our entertaining fundraising traditions, including the “Best Bid” auction featuring items of historical significance. Winners will be announced at the end of the evening. Get ready to test your knowledge with “History Jeopardy,” where you can showcase your expertise in local history.
Dinner reservations are required by September 3rd as it assists with the catering arrangements.
