Stuntz Bay Boat Ramp
The Stuntz Bay Boathouse Historic District has a fascinating history of public access, dating back to the early days of the mining operation. Historic photographs show that families gathered in the area at the base of Stuntz Bay Road for recreation and social interaction, using it as a swimming beach and boat ramp.
As automobiles became more common for transporting motor boats and marine equipment, the need for a boat ramp became evident. The present boat ramp was likely installed around 1940, with a gravel surface inset with narrow strips of cast concrete placed parallel to the shoreline. This design allowed for easy launching and retrieval of boats.
The boat ramp was flanked by two docks, including an elevated wood dock, built in 1962 that stood adjacent to boathouse #95 until 2022. Unfortunately, high water levels and strong winds caused significant damage to the historic dock, which was constructed using cribbing methods. It was replaced with a portable wheeled dock in 2023 to ensure continued access for boaters.
Despite the changes over the years, the Stuntz Bay boathouse area remains a popular destination for those seeking public access to Lake Vermilion. The historical significance of this site is not lost to those who visit it today. Visitors can launch their boats, take in the beauty of the lake and the strong of historic boathouses along the shore, and connect with a rich history of community and recreation that has been a part of this area for generations. The site serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our shared heritage and ensuring public access for future generations to come.
